           Renovation Construction?

Renovation construction seems to be a big problem and a lot of people are being scammed. This is what you should know before hiring any construction contractors to do work in your home. So below; we have included a guide to hiring a contractor to help protect yourself.

The first thing is to decide exactly what you need to have done. By exactly, we mean to make decisions before sitting down with a contractor. If you have decided to remodel your kitchen, bathroom
or just painting; you should figure out just what you want to do and have remodeling plans. Replace the tub or shower stall? New vanity, countertop or faucet?  Do you need a bathroom contractor or a basement remodeling contractor?

Here is a guide to hiring a contractor
:

• Get a least 3 bids and check out the references.

• Make sure the contractor is licensed. You can check with your local licensing board to get that information.

• Door-to-door salesmen offering you a reduced price on work are probably going to only reduce your wallet.

• Avoid high-pressure contractors who push for an immediate decision. Tell them you will get back to them when you are ready.

• Avoid scare tactic contractors who will give you a free inspection and then tell you have faulty wiring or bad roofing. Being scared into a decision is usually not the right one. So go ahead and get a decision for another contractor.

• Take your time about making a decision when hiring contractors. Check them out.

• Get contracts in writing only. A contractor who tells you a contract is not necessary may perform shoddy work or none at all. Then you have no recourse if there is a problem.

• The contract should include the specific work to be done, materials to be used, total cost of project and start and completion dates. Keep-in-mind that some dates may change due to weather, suppliers and other circumstances. But stay on top of those delays and let the contractor know they will not be tolerated unless they are unavoidable.

• Beware of contractors who only want cash and will drive you to the bank to get the money. Once they have the cash they are usually gone. Cash is fine once the work has been performed, but make sure you always get a receipt. Checks are the best and protect you if there is a problem or if warranties or guarantees are involved.

• Down payments should not exceed 10% of the project price. Unless there are some unusual circumstances.
Such as purchasing cabinets or specialty
items and that should be stipulated in the
contract.
