Dining Room Decorating: Ideas to Enhance a Small Space

A dining room is a plus in any home, but when a dining area is small and space is greatly limited it does not look nearly as grand as it could. It is possible to add the illusion of square footage and make a dining room appear more spacious and inviting. With a few dining area storage tips and clever decorating tricks, a small dining room can be made to look much larger. Repurpose a large hutch or buffet, and take down old dining room wall decor that does nothing to enhance the size of the space. Consider the following ideas to greatly enhance a small space, and transform your dining room into the perfect area for entertaining friends and spending quality time with family.

Color Counts

The colors you choose can make or break the look of a space, especially a small room. Instead of selecting deep dark colors that bring the walls closer together, select light colors that will enlarge the appearance of the small space instead of close it in even more. Paint is by far one of the least expensive ways to completely change the appearance of a space, and painting with a lighter hue is one of the most cost-efficient ways to get started on dining room decorating.

Let the Light Shine In

Instead of covering dining area windows with yards of heavy fabric, go lighter in design and color. Heavy fabrics overtake windows especially in a small room. Instead of choosing heavy drapes that will further enclose the space, choose light sheer fabric that will let the light shine in and enhance the room. If direct sunlight is a problem, invest in roman shades or high-quality blinds with style. The blinds or shades will allow for better light control and the lighter-weight window treatments will give the room an airy and more open feel.

Creative Mirror Effects

Enhance the look of any small space with the addition of stylish wall mirrors. They will naturally enlarge the appearance of a dining area by making it look larger. Place one, two, or even three large wall mirrors across from a dining room window that receives plenty of light. The mirrors will enhance the space by multiplying the available square footage. The space will appear twice as large from some angles.

If you want to further enhance a small dining room and make the space look incredibly larger, implement a little strategy with sets of large wall mirrors. Place sets of mirrors directly across from each other between windows or on windowless walls for a dramatic effect that is sure to enhance the overall look of any small dining area. The space will look more spacious than ever and even more stylish and rich in appearance.

Consider Vertical Storage

Added furnishings take up valuable space in a small dining room, and a hutch or buffet is not necessary for holding dining room dishes, knickknacks, and other items. Save floor space by using vertical space. Invest in stylish shelves with sturdy brackets. Use the shelves to hold dinnerware and anything else that would otherwise end up stored in a buffet or hutch. When stylishly displayed it will look impressive, and as a result floor space will be spared for family and guests. The dining room will look larger, more adequate, and amazingly stylish with room to spare.
