                               Murals Create Environments

When you think of murals you usually think of cartoon characters, sports or movie themes. But; murals can create beautiful home environments depending on your likes and dislikes. Love the outdoors? A mural of the outdoors would be a perfect way of bringing the outdoors - indoors!

Be creative when considering doing (or having it done) a mural in your home. Look at photos of exotic locations or scenes that bring back great memories or places you would like to go; but might be too expensive. You can find many images of foreign places on-line or in books at your public library. You should do some extensive searching before deciding on the first image you find. It would be unfortunate to quickly choose an image and find a better one after the mural is completed.

Murals can bring a special effect to any room. Do you have old and outdated cabinets in your kitchen? Why not paint some decorative designs or scenes in each door panel? This is a great and mostly inexpensive way to upgrade your kitchen and give it your personal touch. The theme can be anything you choose; but should be somewhat related to the rooms theme.

Do you like sports? You can paint some sporting items on the walls of your recreation room. I did a skateboarder in a young adults room and had all types of skateboarding items throughout. Of course murals can be any type of design…even graphics.

Murals in a dining room create a visual and conversational tone to the room. You can do a mural on just one wall or around the whole room. Need some ideas? Look at some of the historic room books. You will see murals in many areas of the home. Murals were very popular in the early days of our history; but have become more popular than ever.

Painting a mural of the outdoors; brings the outdoors inside and gives the room a relaxing appeal. And; if you love the outdoors it would give you the feeling of being outdoors every day.

You should start by drawing or tracing your design on a piece of graph paper and transfer the graph to the walls using chalk. Lead pencils will bleed through the paint unless the lines are completely removed. Now just draw in the scaled drawing onto the wall from your design.

As you paint; keep stepping back and viewing your progress. You will be able to catch any flaws or improperly lit shadows or sunlight. And you can always make changes before you get too far into the project.

If you are just starting with mural work…keep it simple. You can always add more to your design as you progress. If you paint a tree; you might want to add some clouds and a sky. How about a fence? Or lattice arbor? Your work can progress and does not need to be completed all at once. Look at it day by day and see if there is some way of enhancing what you have already done. If you are satisfied - then you are finished and you should sign your name on the finished painting. Be sure to take photos at all stages of your work and keep a record of the paint colors and where they were used on the mural. This helps if you ever need to touch up an area in case of damage.
